The South American Andes are the ancestral home of the Alpaca. The Incas cherished this fiber and referred to it as the "Fiber of the Gods". Peru, Bolivia and Chile are still the primary home of the Alpaca.
Alpacas were introduced into the United States and Canada in the 1980s. Alpaca fiber comes in 22 recognized natural colors, and may be blended with many other fibers. Alpaca fiber is a semi-hollow fiber, making it lighter than wool. Because air is trapped in the core, the fabric warms quickly.
Alpaca is a moisture-wicking fabric, which means it wicks moisture away from the body keeping the body warmer without the feeling of "wet" next to the skin. Alpaca fleece is hypoallergenic. The fleece does not contain lanolin, so it does not require chemical scouring agents for processing.
